Educate Yourself

Educate Yourself

Supporting someone with anxiety isn’t about fixing them—it’s about showing up.

Anxiety can feel isolating, overwhelming, and exhausting, and having a solid support system can make a world of difference. If someone in your life is living with anxiety, here are real, effective ways to stand by them and help them on their healing journey.

1. Listen Without Judgment

Sometimes, the best thing you can do is just listen. Let them vent without trying to fix or minimize their feelings. Phrases like “That sounds really hard” or “I’m here for you” go a long way.

2. Educate Yourself

Learn about anxiety. Understand the symptoms, triggers, and challenges. The more informed you are, the more helpful and empathetic you can be.

3. Offer Practical Support

Ask how you can help—don’t assume. Sometimes it’s running an errand, sometimes it’s sitting in silence. Being dependable builds trust and reduces pressure.

4. Respect Their Space

There may be moments when they need quiet time. Don’t take it personally. Giving space is also a form of care.

5. Encourage Healthy Habits

Gently support habits like regular sleep, nutritious meals, physical activity, and deep breathing. Join them in these practices if it helps.

6. Be Patient With Their Progress

Healing is not linear. There will be good and bad days. Avoid pressure like “Why aren’t you better yet?” and replace it with “You’re doing great. Keep going.”

7. Be a Safe Space

Be someone they can count on—someone who won’t judge, ridicule, or abandon them. A consistent presence is incredibly grounding.

8. Celebrate Their Wins

Even small victories deserve celebration. Whether it’s making a phone call, getting out of bed, or attending a social event—recognize and celebrate it.
